1. The Sacred Story (Katha) of Dhanteras
Story 1 – The Farmer and Goddess Lakshmi
Once, Lord Vishnu instructed Goddess Lakshmi not to accompany Him towards the South direction while He went for divine duties. But out of curiosity, Lakshmi Ji disobeyed and wandered into the fields. She plucked flowers and sugarcane, enjoying her time.
When Lord Vishnu returned and saw this, He was displeased and said Lakshmi would have to serve a poor farmer’s family for 12 years. During this period, Lakshmi Ji stayed in the farmer’s house and blessed them with wealth and prosperity.
Before leaving, Lakshmi advised the farmer to clean his house and light lamps on Trayodashi (13th lunar day), keep a copper vessel filled with coins, and worship it – promising to stay in their house all year. Thus, the tradition of lighting lamps and worshipping wealth on Dhanteras began.
Story 2 – The Prince Saved from Untimely Death
Another famous tale tells of a young prince destined to die on the fourth day of his marriage due to a snake bite. His clever bride kept him awake that night by placing gold, silver, and jewels at the entrance and lighting several lamps. She sang songs to prevent him from sleeping.
When Lord Yama (the God of Death) arrived in the form of a serpent, the dazzling glow of lamps and wealth blinded Him, and He could not enter. The prince’s life was saved. Since then, devotees light a Yama Deep (lamp for Lord Yama) on Dhanteras night to protect against untimely death.
Lesson: Both stories remind us that discipline, devotion, and divine blessings attract prosperity, well-being, and protection in life.
